Background
My family has always been very involved with computer technology. Our parents encouraged us from a young age to embrace technology and they provided us with the best they could to allow us to do so. I have fond memories of the Apple IIe games we played as children and the BASIC programming we learnt to make our own games.
We were one of the first families I knew to get the Internet, although I won’t claim to be the first. We were early adopters and I remember Dad coming home with a modem and he showed us this ‘Inter-net’. I didn’t completely understand it at the time, but it was definitely exciting and us kids would fight for access to the only Internet enabled computer we had. Slowly the computers were added to our house and it wasn’t long before we needed a LAN so we could all share our connection.
It’s interesting that we all seem to have taken a different approach to technology and whilst my brothers studied computer or technology related fields at uni, this has always just been a keen hobby of mine. I have concentrated more on web based technologies and I have made many websites (and many versions of this one). I am also developing my skills in computer based graphic design and I am learning as much as I can about linux although that isn’t a strong priority for me.
TheStable is hosted by me on my server, running ClarkConnect. This also handles my email, software updates and local traffic routing. Initially I bought my server off eBay for less than $300 (it was a decommissioned server that no one really wanted despite being in great condition and having good specs) and it was originally just going to be a play thing. Now it has become integral to our network, my email (ie my life) and this website.
